Greek Doric Columns
The Greek Doric order is so named because it was the architectural style of the Dorian Greeks. Like the Tuscan order that came later Greek Doric is considered by many to be utilitarian, emoting simple strength and stability. The proportions of this order are thought to be derived from the proportions of a man (athlete or warrior). Traditionally, the Greek Doric column is stout and runs anywhere from a 4 to 1 to a 6 to1 height to diameter ratio. The Greek Doric column has no base and when fluted (channeled) there is no flat between the flutes but rather they meet in a ridge (arrises). Greek Doric flutes (channels) do not terminate in a half circle like Ionic flutes but rather extend through the length of the shaft.
